Fabrics Care
Fabrics Care Guide
Silk & Silk Blends (Kanjivaram, Banarasi, Mysore Crepe, Dola Silk):
- Always dry clean to preserve the fabric's integrity and zari luster.
- Air dry in shade only; never wring, machine wash, or rub the saree vigorously.
- Store in muslin bags with silica gel sachets to prevent moisture and "crease cutting."
- Iron on medium heat on the reverse side to protect delicate metallic threads.
Cotton & Linen (Chettinad, Mul Mul, Kota, Jute Cotton):
- Hand wash cold with mild detergent; dry clean the first time to set the colors.
- Dry flat in shade to prevent fiber breakage and fading from direct sunlight.
- Starch lightly after washing to maintain the characteristic crispness of the weave.
- Iron on high heat while the fabric is slightly damp for a wrinkle-free finish.
Chiffon & Georgette (Semi-Crepe, Chiffon Georgette):
- Dry clean or gentle hand wash; avoid soaking or machine cycles that cause snagging.
- Never wring or hang while wet, as these fabrics lose their shape and stretch easily.
- Store folded or rolled rather than on hangers to maintain the original drape.
- Iron on very low heat or use a steamer to avoid scorching the delicate fibers.
Specialty Work (Hand-Painted, Applique Work & Embroidery Sarees):
- Dry clean only to protect hand-painted motifs and intricate embroidery.
- Avoid perfumes and sprays directly on the fabric to prevent staining or zari darkening.
- Store with work facing inward to prevent friction or snagging against other garments.
- Spot clean sparingly by blotting only; never rub the painted or worked areas.
Tussar & Moonga Silk:
- Dry clean only to protect the unique "wild silk" texture and natural golden sheen.
- Store in a cool, dry place with cotton covers; Tussar is prone to mildew in humid conditions.
- Never use bleach or harsh dyes, as the porous nature of Tussar absorbs chemicals deeply.
- Iron on a warm setting with a press cloth; avoid high heat which can make the fibers brittle.
Pure Linen & Linen Blends:
- Hand wash cold or machine wash on a delicate cycle with a very mild liquid detergent.
- Do not wring; roll in a towel to remove excess water and dry flat in the shade to prevent stretching.
- Iron while damp on a high heat setting to smooth out Linen's characteristic deep wrinkles.
- Avoid over-drying, as bone-dry linen becomes stiff and more difficult to drape comfortably.
Butter Crepe & Satin Silk:
- Gentle hand wash in cold water; these synthetic blends are durable but sensitive to high heat.
- Air dry on a padded hanger to maintain the "fall" and silhouette of the saree.
- Use a low-heat iron or a vertical steamer; direct high heat can cause the fabric to "glaze" or melt.
- Store separately to avoid snags from jewelry or zippers, as the smooth surface shows pulls easily.
Organza & Tissue:
- Dry clean preferred to maintain the stiff, "glassy" finish that gives Organza its volume.
- Never fold tightly; store by hanging on a padded hanger or rolling to avoid permanent sharp creases.
- Iron on the lowest setting with extreme care, as tissue and organza are highly heat-vulnerable.
- Refold periodically if stored in a chest to prevent the delicate fabric from splitting at the fold lines.
Dhwanee (Salwar Suits & Co-Ord Sets):
- Wash the full set together to ensure that any natural fading happens uniformly across the Kameez, Salwar, and Dupatta.
- Hand wash cold with mild detergent; for heavily embroidered or silk-blend sets, professional dry cleaning is highly recommended.
- Dry in shade, never wring; heavy cotton or linen suits should be dried flat to prevent the weight of the water from stretching the garment.
- Iron on the reverse side to protect prints, embroidery, or hand-work from direct heat and "iron shine".
